Design Intent & Architectural Monograph
Conceived as an elemental retreat grounded in its geological surroundings, The Solstice Pavilion balances raw tactile materials with crystalline precision. The layout is arranged around a central contemplative courtyard where local stone, filtered water elements, and native desert flora create an internal microclimate.
The architectural envelope is constructed from 500mm-thick stabilized rammed-earth walls sourced directly from the site excavation, establishing immense thermal mass that dampens extreme temperature swings between desert noon and starlit midnight. Deep cantilevered zinc roofs frame cinematic views toward the horizon while completely shielding expansive low-iron glazing from direct summer solar gain.
Inside, the spatial sequence transitions smoothly from compressed, shadowy threshold vestibules into soaring 4.2-meter living spaces lined in board-formed architectural concrete and hand-oiled rift-sawn white oak. Custom flush detailing and concealed perimeter lighting elevate the sense of quiet permanence.
